Mumbai v. Google Earth
Mumbai v. Google Earth
In the wake of the horrific terror attacks on Mumbai, a petition has been filed in the Bombay High Court to ban the use of Google Earth in India and to order Google to blur "sensitive areas" in the country until the case is resolved. According to the Times of London, the petition accuses Google of aiding, however inadvertently, "terrorists in plotting attacks." But a few oddities stand out in the story. First, as this space has noticed before, the terrorists could have gleaned the same geographical information by buying tourist maps sold around the city. Second, note that the petition doesn't aim to force Google to stop mapping sensitive targets; it aims to shut down Google Earth altogether. And when you read down to the last grafs in the story, you learn that India is busy developing Bhuvan, its own rival version of Google Earth. Could someone simply be using the Mumbai attacks to advance a protectionist agenda?
