Maurice "Sonny" Cohn

The Gist:

Founder and chairman of Cohmad Securities Corp., Maurice Cohn had a nebulous business relationship with Bernie. His group has been the subject of numerous accusations regarding its role in drawing in new investors to the Madoff scheme.

What's Next:

On June 22, Picard filed a complaint against Cohmad to try to recover $100 million in lost investments. A report from Bloomberg quoted Picard as saying that the very name Cohmad is a hybrid of Cohn and Madoff. Maurice Cohn and fellow Cohmad associates Marcia Cohn and Robert Jaffe also face allegations of civil fraud from the SEC.

Cohmad has remained relatively silent as the accusations poured in—except for those occasions when they've been legally obligated to comment, of course. Jaffe's attorney has been quoted as saying that the SEC's claim "smacks of impulsiveness and efforts at self-justification."
