Not Lonely at the Top
JPMorgan Chase shows that two CEOs can be better than one.

PARTNERS: Sandy Weill and John Reed, Citigroup, 1998-2000
John Reed has long claimed that before the 1998 merger of Weill's Travelers Group and Citicorp, the two men agreed to retire at the same time. Weill says that never happened and in 2000 convinced the board to name him sole-CEO and show Reed the door.
WINNER: Weill, at first. Nine years later, though, with Citigroup pretty much a ward of the government, it is Weill's reputation that has taken a beating and not Reed's. Reed wins in the end.
