John McCain is right—the attorney general of New York is a perfectly ridiculous fit as his SEC chairman.

Since McCain is running for president he, too, has been forced to squeeze lemonade out of his own limited economic knowledge. In a recent interview on CNBC, he suggested that his time in Senate has prepared him to reign over America’s economy. “I understand the economy. I was chairman of the commerce committee that oversights every part of our economy.” It’s the banking committee, though, that “oversights” Wall Street.

But if John McCain would like to take credit for watching over the economy in his years on the commerce committee, so be it. That would make this mess partially his fault, yet another trait he shares with Cuomo. Before becoming attorney general of New York, Cuomo’s position as HUD secretary meant he oversaw much of the expansion in subprime mortgages. As a lengthy, comprehensive piece in the Village Voice details, “A kid from Queens without any real banking or real-estate experience was the only man in Washington with the power to regulate the giants of home finance.” That kid was Andrew Cuomo. And those giants of home finance were Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

With a track record like that, Andrew Cuomo is the perfect SEC chairman for an economic work-in-progress like John McCain. Even though it’s clear Cuomo and McCain are meant to be the next Fred Flintstone and Barney Rubble, Cuomo is playing hard to get. In response to McCain’s comments on 60 Minutes, Cuomo’s office issued a statement about nothing:

Wow, what a waste of an article. If all you were going to do was link to the Voice article, why didn't you just do that?

Honestly, if you actually read the Voice article, it's pretty crappy--a transparent attempt to pin the blame for a very complicated situation on one guy. But I guess actually reading the articles you link to is beyond Slate.
