John McCain is not going to be the 44th president of the United States. Why? Because he never figured out how to campaign on the economy.

In exit polls, six of every 10 voters nationwide listed the economy as their No. 1 issue. In Indiana, Obama beat McCain by 11 points among econ-minded voters; Obama had a 10-point lead among those voters in Ohio; 13 points in Virginia; 10 points in North Carolina; 12 in Florida; 13 in Missouri; and a huge 21 points in Pennsylvania. In a fitting end, the candidate who couldn’t talk about numbers was defeated by inexorable mathematics.

To commemorate McCain’s passing, we decided to relive his campaign’s 10 greatest economic moments—ranked here from mildly offensive to seriously damning.

10) In response to the question, “Give me a specific number, where do you move from middle class to rich?” McCain, Aug. 16, 2008: “If you’re just talking about income—how about $5 million?”

9) McCain, Sept. 16, 2008: "I know how to fix this economy. I have had great experience on these issues as chairman of the commerce committee."

8) Top McCain strategist, Oct. 5, 2008: "If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we're going to lose."
