7) McCain, summer 2008: “Opening up the health insurance market to more vigorous nationwide competition, as we have done over the last decade in banking, would provide more choices of innovative products less burdened by the worst excesses of state-based regulation.”

6) McCain economic adviser Phil Gramm, July 9, 2008: “You’ve heard of mental depression—this is a mental recession. … We’ve sort of become a nation of whiners.”

5) McCain spokeswoman Tracey Schmitt, Oct. 22, 2008: “With all of the important issues facing the country right now, it’s remarkable that we’re spending time talking about pantsuits and blouses. It was always the intent that the clothing go to a charitable purpose after the campaign.”

4) McCain, Aug. 20, 2008: Asked how many homes he owns: "I think—I'll have my staff get to you. … It's condominiums where—I'll have them get to you."

3) McCain, Dec. 17, 2007: "The issue of economics is not something I've understood as well as I should. … I've got Greenspan's book."

2) McCain, Sept. 24, 2008: “It has become clear that no consensus has developed to support the administration’s proposal. I do not believe that the plan on the table will pass as it currently stands, and we are running out of time. Tomorrow morning, I will suspend my campaign and return to Washington after speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative.”
