Tyson Beefs Up Profits

Most people think of Tyson Foods as a chicken processor. And so it is, but it is also one of the biggest producers of beef and pork.

Good thing, too, because Tyson's chicken business is in the dumper, but thanks to its beef and pork operations, the company on Monday reported fourth-quarter profits of $48 million, up from $32 million a year ago.

The chicken industry is still reeling from soaring grain prices earlier this year, as well as overproduction and relatively soft demand. Tyson's chicken operations lost $118 million in the fiscal year, while beef showed a profit of $106 million. Pork profits were $145 million.

"Producing the three major proteins has proven to be a strategic advantage," said CEO Richard Bond.
