By Dan Mitchell

On Tuesday of last week, Kraft and the Georgia Nut Company told the Food and Drug Administration that salmonella was found in some pistachio products and issued a voluntary recall. On Friday, Kroger issued a recall on a very specific product: Private Selection Shelled Pistachios sold in 10-ounce containers with a sell-by date of Dec. 13 or Dec.

By Dan Mitchell
Posted Monday, March 30, 2009 - 11:17am

Starbucks is under assault not only by a foray from McDonald's into high-end coffee drinks but also from smaller rivals like Peet's and from the trend of people brewing more coffee at home, according to a note issued Monday by Stifel Nicolaus analyst Steve West.

Finally, months after prices of commodities and energy started to fall from their historic highs, and months after grocers started to put pressure on food producers, there are some signs that retail food prices have begun to fall.

Food-Safety Failure: Numbers

By Dan Mitchell
Posted Thursday, March 26, 2009 - 11:34am

It's not news that the nation's food-safety system is broken. From preventing disease outbreaks to tracking them when they occur, the system is full of holes, leading not only to death and illness but also to immense financial costs.

But two new reports—one from the government, one from a health-advocacy organization—put some disturbing numbers to the problem.

I'm not sure what to think about this, but I'm pretty sure I should be appalled: Yum Brands-owned KFC is sponsoring potholes.

Acai Berry Crushed

By Dan Mitchell
Posted Wednesday, March 25, 2009 - 11:38am

When claims that a particular food is particularly good for you start showing up in your spam filter, that's a good sign you should be wary.

So it is with the acai berry. Acai juice contains lots of antioxidants. It's good for you, no doubt. But all fruit juices, and lots of other foods, contain antioxidants. There's no reason to think that acai is some kind of magical elixir.

If you've gone from Whole Foods to Kroger to Aldi and are still hoping to save money on groceries, you still have an option: buying at auction.

According to an Associated Press article, such auctions are increasing in popularity—which is probably true, though the article presents only anecdotes.

Anthony Bourdain, the chef-cum-cable-TV star, offers a bleak forecast for the restaurant industry in a Q and A with Nation's Restaurant News reporter Lisa Jennings.

There is "going to be a very rude awakening for a lot of types of restaurants if they're not aware yet how drastically things have changed," he said.

Self-Regulation Kills

By Dan Mitchell

In an example of how self-regulation could work, Nestle USA reportedly decided against buying peanut butter from Peanut Corporation of America, the company responsible for the recent, deadly salmonella outbreak. Nestle inspectors visited the company's plants in Georgia and Texas, witnessed how awful they were, and took their business elsewhere.

Attention Grocers: Zag Where Wal-Mart Zigs

By Dan Mitchell

Attention grocers: If Wal-Mart opens a store near yours, don't try to copy it by lowering your prices. It won't help, and it may hurt, according to a new study.

Having Wal-Mart as a new neighbor means that—no surprise—grocers and other competing retailers will likely take a sales hit. But if retailers try to compete on price, or try to mimic Wal-Mart's product mix, they'll take a worse sales hit.

Starbucks To Serve Up Recession Plan

By Dan Mitchell

Last year's annual shareholder meeting for Starbucks investors was a jumpin' affair. Singer k.d. lang performed. And founder Howard Schultz, who had recently taken back the job of CEO, was greeted with a standing ovation, despite the fact that Starbucks shares had been cut nearly in half over the previous year.

Economic calamities sometimes have a way of bringing out the worst in governments. China was already looking askance at Coca-Cola's $2.3 billion bid to buy China Huiyuan, the country's largest juice maker. Now it has formally rejected the bid.

Pick Your Poison

Food labels are becoming more informative, but no label can ever contain all the information a discerning, health-conscious shopper needs.

For instance, unless you buy organic produce, you really have no idea how much pesticide residue your produce might contain. But a handy new tool from the Environmental Working Group will help.

Somebody Doesn't Like Sara Lee

By Dan Mitchell

Sara Lee CEO Brenda Barnes' timing on trying to sell the company's European household-products unit, which accounts for 15 percent of the company's sales, may seem off.

After all, she came to Sara Lee in February 2005 bent on focusing the company on its core food businesses. She's long been under pressure to dump the unit. And the mergers and acquisitions market isn't exactly robust just now.

Does the Obama administration's choice of the former New York City health commissioner Margaret Hamburg indicate that the FDA will be split in two, with one body regulating drugs and medical devices, and the other food?

Why You Can't Buy Girl Scout Cookies Online

The most bafflingly tasteless headline I've seen in some time is on a blog item published Tuesday by the San Francisco Chronicle. "Lexus v. Girl Scouts: Lexus Wins," is about a guy who accidentally plowed into a group of Scouts selling cookies, injuring several of them.

It's hard to know what to make of George Will's column on Monday, which quotes, apparently approvingly, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack and author Michael Pollan. That's because Will never actually gets around to making any kind of point.

Want to know why you're fat? If you haven't seen it yet, This is Why You're Fat (where dreams become heart attacks) will tell you, pictorially. And the answers are disturbing, such as the item devoted to Armour Pork Brains in Milk Gravy. If the product itself doesn't put you off, how about the fact that it contains an incredible 1,170 percent of the daily recommended allowance of cholesterol per serving?

As it pursued its ridiculous, months-late attack on Whole Foods' acquisition of Wild Oats Market, the Federal Trade Commission remained silent. Now that the case has been settled, with Whole Foods agreeing to sell off 32 former Wild Oats stores, FTC Chairman Jon Leibowitz is finally talking. And he sounds ... ridiculous.
