Android Hits 1 Million

T-Mobile's G1 smartphones have now sold to the tune of 1 million units, Deutsche Telekom announced earlier this week. That sounds impressive, until you realize that the phones have been on the market since October. And, as CNet notes, until you realize that the Apple (AAPL) iPhone sold 1 million units in its first two months.

ChannelWeb gushes that the Android phone is just getting started, as Motorola (MOT), Samsung, and Sony Ericsson all plan to eventually release smartphones using Google's operating system. And, of course, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) is exploring Android as a possible operating system for its next line of netbooks. But don't be fooled: Google (GOOG) has a long way to go before it makes a serious dent in the mobile Internet platform market.

The smartphone metric company Admob has just released a new report, in which Apple's iPhone is still easily the big dog to beat. According to the report, the Android phone has just 6 percent of the market. Meanwhile, the iPhone owns 50 percent, the BlackBerry 22 percent, and the Windows Mobile phone 11 percent. That puts Android in a race with Palm OS for fourth place. But hey, there's always next year.
