Bing Launches. Sort Of.

Today's the big day for Bing, the new search engine that Microsoft (MSFT) rolled out today at the All Things Digital conference. Except it isn't. Microsoft issued a press release announcing the new site, and CEO Steve Ballmer walked through the site at the conference. But oddly, the site that Ballmer and the rest of Microsoft has hyped so much this week is still dead. Type in http://www.Bing.com, and all you'll get is white space.

Microsoft's Big Search Gambit

One of Google's (GOOG) most remarkable accomplishments is, undoubtedly, figuring out how to dominate the world of search without advertising its services. In an ad-saturated era, the company that built its fortune by being the world's greatest advertising vehicle did so without buying commercials or billboards or Web banners. It simply built the greatest search engine in history and let word-of-mouth spread the news.

Earlier this month, Microsoft's (MSFT) lawyers begged the European Commission not to force it to include Google's Chrome browser on Windows, arguing that doing so would hand too much power over the Internet to Google (GOOG). Chrome has next to no market share, in Europe or anywhere.

Google Almost Bought a Paper

By Chris Thompson

That's what CEO Eric Schmidt told the Financial Times yesterday. In an extensive Q&A with the newspaper, Schmidt reveals that Google (GOOG) seriously considered either buying a newspaper as a for-profit enterprise or hiring a pack of smart lawyers to reconfigure the paper as a nonprofit venture.

Google's (GOOG) bag of tricks just got a little fatter, as the company announced a new feature for Gmail yesterday. Gmail users can now set up their e-mail service to translate messages from one language to another. Once "message translation" is enabled under settings, a link will appear above each in-coming message, allowing users to translate the message to any of 41 different languages. Even Maltese.

Google: Still Kicking Ass

It's good to be Google's (GOOG) CEO. Among other things, universities beg you to deliver the season's commencement address. This year, Eric Schmidt sauntered up to the stage at the University of Pennsylvania, where he alternated between trite homilies and mild banter—in other words, gave a commencement address. Schmidt told the assembled students to turn off their computers and assorted devices, walk away from their anal five-year plans, connect with other human beings, and nourish the child within.

Google Blackout: The Fallout

By Chris Thompson
Posted Friday, May 15, 2009 - 10:34am

As promised, Google (GOOG) has explained exactly what caused yesterday's meltdown and threw millions of Internet users into panic and despair. In a blog post yesterday afternoon, Vice President of Operations Urs Hoelzle claimed that a system error routed a significant share of Google's Web traffic through servers in Asia, backlogging the system and grinding much of Google's services to a halt.

Google's Outage Statement

Google (GOOG) representatives have now officially confirmed that their services were interrupted for a few hours this morning, but that's about all they're willing to say at the moment. Here are their statements in full:

"Earlier today, Google News was temporarily unavailable for many users, from approximately 3:30 AM until around 7:00 AM, Pacific Time. This issue has now been resolved. We know how important Google News hit is to our users, so we take issues like this very seriously."

Was Google Hacked?

Perhaps you may have noticed the seas boiling red with blood, the whore of Babylon rising, and the Antichrist roaming the Earth, strewing carnage in his wake. That's because Google (GOOG) crashed this morning. Yes, you read that right: Google went down.

Google's Japanese Problem

By Chris Thompson
Posted Wednesday, May 13, 2009 - 1:20pm

Google's Street View can't catch a break these days. First Greece, which is still smarting from memories of its military dictatorships, banned the company from tootling around the country's streets, snapping pics of people and posting them online. Now, thanks to a public outcry in Japan, Google will have to reshoot all photographs of Japanese streets, effectively scrapping all the work it had done for Street View up to now.

Google's European Problem

By Chris Thompson

When Google (GOOG) tried to expand its Street View service to Europe, the company almost immediately ran into problems. Legions of Britons complained that Street View took photographs of ordinary people in potentially embarrassing circumstances and slapped them on the Web. In one posh township outside of London, a mob of people surrounded a Street View camera car and politely told the driver to take his tripod somewhere else.

Could Android explode?

The telecommunications research company Strategy Analytics has released a new report on the 2009 smartphone market, and the news ain't great for Apple (AAPL). That might sound odd, considering the report predicts that iPhone shipments will grow by a healthy 79 percent. Here's the problem: Shipments of phones using Google's rival Android operating system, the report concludes, will grow by a whopping 900 percent.

After weeks of anticipation, Google (GOOG) is about to finally roll out an updated version of the Android operating system. T-Mobile, which sells the G1 smartphone, will allow customers to download the new OS, dubbed "cupcake" while in development but now known simply as Android 1.5, by the end of next week. T-Mobile's smartphones are about to get a lot smarter.

Google's Latest Domination

By Chris Thompson

You may think Google (GOOG) dominates the search market, with 63.7 percent of all searches conducted in the United States compared with Yahoo's (YHOO) 20 percent. But you haven't been looking at mobile Internet devices, which everyone agrees will be the most dynamic and explosive piece of the online world for years to come.

Feds Probe Eric Schmidt

By Chris Thompson

Google just can't seem to get out of the feds' spotlight. Last year's proposed ad arrangement with Yahoo first attracted concerns that Google was dangerously close to assembling an unbreakable monopoly on search ads, and since then, the federal government has been scrutinizing the company's operations more and more.

Google Hires Goats

Google's public image has taken a few hits over the years, what with its collaboration with Chinese authorities, monopoly concerns, and the human tendency to suspect anyone who adopts "Don't Be Evil" as its motto. But the company scored a huge P.R. coup over the weekend with its new lawn management strategy.

Can Android Save Motorola?

Yesterday, Motorola (MOT) CEO Sanjay Jha announced that the company would introduce two Android-based smartphones by the end of the year, confirming rumors that Motorola was planning to use Google's (GOOG) operating system as the basis for its big gamble to once again become a presence in the handset market.
