Viral Wedding Sells Song
Since we're all feeling a little bloated when it comes to the Google-Microsoft duel, let's switch gears to YouTube, where once again the video site has made the news. A few weeks ago, a happy Minnesota couple got themselves hitched, organized their grooms and bridesmaids into a dance ensemble, and sent them groovin' down the aisle to the sounds of Chris Brown's hit, "Forever." After the video hit YouTube, the clip became a smash, with almost 13 million people tuning in to their nuptial bliss.
Now, Google (GOOG) has announced that the sudden viral exposure has propelled the Rhianna-bashing songster back into the top charts. According to a Google blog post, the wedding clip has bumped Brown up to No. 4 on the iTunes singles chart and No. 3 on the Amazon (AMZN) MP3 list. New York Times writer Brad Stone points out that while music labels like Warner have fought YouTube over copyright issues in the past, Brown's label, Sony, was quick to slap an ad on the wedding clip, enabling viewers to buy and download the song with a few clicks. It's hard to blame Google for bragging. Meanwhile, here's the happy wedding in all its glory.
