Yahoo Blues
Yahoo Blues
Folks, I'm beside myself with sorrow at the Yahoo layoff news. Look, I get why they had to go. The stock is awful. The former leadership was awful. The market share is awful. It's an awful situation that we all saw coming. But some of my former Pets.com colleagues work there, and without naming names, I'm worried what they're going to do after this.
The severance packages look like they're only four months long. While this is still generous, think of the economy as we see it. Unemployment numbers aren't expected to turn around any time soon, and Silicon Valley has been hit especially hard. Unless these guys have been germinating the next Twitter in their spare time, they're going to be out of work in an industry that doesn't have much of it. And of course I realize that they're sitting pretty compared with many other Americans without these severance packages and lead-in salaries. I get all of this. But it still sucks.
And don't get me started about the NPR layoffs. I had quite a crush on Madeleine Brand and her silky voice box.
For those of you worried about LOLEconz layoffs—stop worrying. Thus far it's just me (although that may change in the coming weeks—stay tuned!), and I'm not about to fire myself. I'm living on a wing and a prayer—aka angel investing from a secret family source. We're going to glide this recession out in style.
But for today, needless to say, I am one sad kitteh.
