The Schmuck-o-Meter Goes on Hiatus

Friends, all that starts must come to an end. The Madoff Files has spent nearly two months tracking just how schmucky Bernard Madoff is. But now he’s going to the slammer, and we need to make a final assessment of the Schmuck-o-Meter.

We started the Schmuck-o-Meter at 333 schmuck points, dead even between run-of-the-mill schmuck and Satan. Since then, we’ve seen suicides, Madoff-inspired art, and anecdotal sob stories from his victims. Over time, the Schmuck-o-Meter has crept ever-upward, yesterday reaching 488 SPs. And now, with his pleading guilty and facing certain punishment for what he’s done, he’s looking less like the devil incarnate. So we’ll dock him -20 SPs and call it a day.

That means Bernie will end his glorious run on the Schmuck-o-Meter at 468 SPs. We’ll dust off the meter if any salacious revelations come when the victims get their day in court. For now, the prosecution rests.
