Net Neutrality: Trickier Than You Think

Internet cables.

As a very small company in the Internet media business, NewWest.Net is entirely dependent on infrastructure owned and operated by others, and thus the intensifying debate over so-called “net neutrality” is of more than passing interest. In fact, the question of how the Internet is regulated (and the issue really is how, not if) could matter a great deal to all sorts of businesses, large and small. But getting involved and having an impact on this complicated debate isn’t for the faint of heart.

I like to do business on a handshake, and in fact, I consider personal trust to be a key pillar of any business relationship. This approach has its risks, and I’m often advised that I’m asking for trouble by forgoing contracts in favor of informal agreements. But in my experience the efficiencies and other benefits that come with trust-based arrangements far outweigh the risks of being ripped off.

The players of the Missoula Osprey, our local Pioneer League baseball team, are not always the most elegant performers on the field. Mostly kids in their teens or early 20s, many of them from the Dominican Republic, the Osprey players are on the first rung of the professional baseball ladder, and few will ever make it all the way to the Arizona Diamondbacks.
