AC/DC Excels
A spreadsheet music video spreads like a virus.
Last October, rock and roll juggernauts AC/DC released this short viral music video, shot entirely in Microsoft Excel. Last week, the video won the 2009 MediaGuardian Innovation Award for Best Advertising Campaign. Don’t know whether to rock out or geek out? Neither do we: Have a look and vote below on whether it helps or hurts the band’s brand.
Title: AC/DC “Rock ’N’ Roll Train”—ASCII Music Video in Excel
Stats: There are a lot of firsts for this video, which was initially released in October around the time of the worldwide release of AC/DC's most recent album, Black Ice. The video has now logged more than 1.3 million views and 1,051 comments. True, that's a fraction of the attention paid to the official video (9 million-plus viewings and 20,000 comments), but the critics (and geeks) love this lo-fi version, recorded entirely in Microsoft Excel format. Last week, the video claimed top honors at the MediaGuardian Innovation Awards, winning some industry kudos for its creators, the digital-design boutique division of Sony/BMG in London. AC/DC is signed to the major label, Sony/BMG.
