Fiat Is Not So Racy
In a bike vs. car battle, the Italian auto company falls short.
Fiat makes tiny cars, but its name has blown up recently for its potential role in saving Chrysler. Now, thanks to this video, you can watch one of its cars in action. Does this give you faith in Fiat or convince you that buying a bike would be a better investment?
Title: James May's Fiat 500 vs BMX bandits
Stats: More than 215,000 viewings and 341 text comments since it was first posted to YouTube in October 2008. Not exceptional for an automotive brand, but there's been a notable surge of interest in this video in the past few weeks. Why? We cannot be completely sure, but we think it could be out of sheer curiosity. Fiat, it's now clear, will be merging with Chrysler, a move that brings Italy's most popular auto brand that much closer to American roadways for the first time in a generation.
What you see: Top Gear fans already know James May. He is one of the presenters on this popular BBC TV show dedicated to the mighty automobile, material for which appears on YouTube weekly to rave reviews. In this seven-minute segment, May pits Fiat's most iconic brand, the Cinquecento or Fiat 500, against perhaps the smallest of all four-wheelers (or, make that two two-wheelers), two BMX Bandit racing bikes, through the streets of Budapest, Hungary. Who wins? To put it bluntly, it's not a good day for Fiat engineers.
