The Post-Hit

An artist uses the sticky reminder notes as a medium in this viral video.

What you see: If you are a fan of stop-motion video effects, music from Norwegian electronica duo Röyksopp, and Post-it notes, here's a video for you. (Judging by the enthusiastic viewer ratings, there are a lot of you.) Clocking in at 1:54, this video takes the viewer through all the demons that enter our head when on a tight deadline, flashed up on the wall above a desk in colorful Post-it note animation.

Take Out/TakeAway: A technician/scientist at 3M is credited with inventing the durable Post-it note, a patent it held until the early '90s, about the time the PC age would make these little sticky tabs a bit less relevant to our workdays. Just a bit. Who knew it would take an art student working round-the-clock in a four-day shoot, plus 1,500 adoring YouTube fans, to bring them back into the spotlight?

Social Media Effect: Sorry to break this to most brand managers, but the truth is there is no guarantee that your slick new video will go viral. It helps, though, if the video is truly creative, visually stimulating, and imaginative. Art student Bang-yao Liu probably wasn't looking for the YouTube kudos, just a good grade. 3M, no doubt, couldn't be any more pleased Bang-yao Liu chose its iconic product to illustrate a little creativity.

YouTube BrandWatch is The Big Money's exploration into how the world's best-known businesses, so adept at managing their images offline, are being perceived online, where control is harder to come by. Every week, The Big Money features a corporate-themed video that's had significant viewership on YouTube: some approved, some unapproved, some mashed-up combinations of the two. And we'll ask our readers to vote on how the video affects the brands. We think the responses will surprise you, and provide a window onto what is fast becoming the most important playground for corporate games.
